Some of you may have noticed the large poster on the notice boards both outside church and in the Church Centre advertising a series of events called ‘Just 10’, and still others – if not all – will have received three cards to post through the doors of neighbours to advertise these events. What is ‘Just 10’ though?
Hosted by the Rickmansworth Deanery (to which we belong!), ‘Just 10’ is an evangelistic event led by J John, recognised to be one of the countries leading evangelists.
Taking the 10 Commandments, and expounding up their relevance for us today, J John, explores ‘the realisation that contemporary society shows many alarming signs of having turned its back on God’. Unlike the do's and don'ts most people imagine when quizzed about the Commandments, the message is both challenge and encouragement. 'Thou shalt not steal' is entitled 'How to prosper with a clear conscience' and 'Thou shalt not commit adultery' is unpacked as 'How to Affair-Proof your Relationships.'
Taking place at Christ Church, Chorleywood each Sunday evening for 10 weeks from the 20th April, the whole event is being supported by churches across the Deanery, including St. Mary’s. At the United Council meeting in January, the decision was made to give support to the event as a) it is local, b) it is recognising and valuing the gifts of others and supporting them, and c) it brings together our Deanery in a positive and pro-active manner, working together for the growth of the kingdom of God.
If you have posted all your cards and would like more, there are some at the back of church. If there is someone you think might be interested in attending, why not invite them along? If you’re looking for a kick start in an area of your spiritual life, then why not go along yourself and see what it’s all about… God moves in mysterious ways – and the Holy Spirit could just be offering something to you through this event.
Starting with commandment ten - 'How to find true contentment', working down to number one - 'How to live by Priorities' on the last week, J John believes that 'the Ten Commandments - God's Top Ten - are not obsolete, they are absolute.' Of a recent series, J John commented, 'I have been enormously humbled at the way our series have helped people to re-assess, re-focus their priorities and in many cases, restart their lives.'
I commend this whole series to you, for your prayers and for your action.
