As we left the Family Service on Sunday 1st June, Deborah presented each member of the congregation with a sunflower seed and exhorted us to take them home, plant and nurture them, just as we should nurture our faith in God.
Ever one to do as I'm told by the Vicar (no rude comments, please, Deborah!), I planted two seeds, one for Gary and one for me.
Those who know me well will be absolutely staggered to find that one has germinated and is growing happily in its pot. The other has shown absolutely no sign of life whatsoever. What this says about either Gary's faith or my own, I'm not too sure. However, given my complete lack of horticultural skills, a 50% success rate is bordering on a miracle.
I'm not sure whether 50% is good enough for God. What do you think?
7th June 2008 Planted the seeds and sent up a prayer not to be humiliated by the efforts of younger members of the congregation. Ben Campbell promised me to keep me informed of the progress of his sunflower. |

16th June 2008 My prayer is answered (in part). One seed germinates. I can look Ben in the eye and claim some success. |

29th June 2008 The second seed has germinated! Some faith takes a little longer to develop.
Does anyone know what I need to do about these sunflowers now? Care instructions welcomed - please!
13th July 2008 Planted both sunflowers in the garden.
20th July 2008 Sad news to report. The smaller sunflower has been eaten by rabbits. Don't believe anyone who tells you that we should love all God's creatures. Off to buy a shotgun... |
